Title: In Defense of Martha
Primary Text: Luke 10:38-42
1. Are you someone who enjoys hosting people, or do you prefer to be the guest?
2. Think of someone who faithfully serves others behind the scenes. What do you admire about them?
3. What image, story, or idea from the message, "The Better Part? In Defense of Martha," stayed with you this week? What did you want to discuss?
4. Read Luke 10:38-42 again. This time, pay close attention to Martha. What do you notice about her words, actions, and concerns that you may have overlooked before?
5. What clues in Jesus' words suggest that Martha's problem isn't serving itself, but something else? What do you notice?
6. If last week's message helped us appreciate Mary's attentiveness, what do you think this week's message invites us to appreciate about Martha? How might these two sisters actually need one another?
7. Read John 11:20-27. What does this story reveal about Martha's relationship with Jesus? What strengths or gifts do you see in her?
8. Read John 12:1-8. What is Martha doing in this passage? What does Jesus say (or not say) about Martha's actions? What's the difference between this passage and the one above from Luke 10?
9. This week, where is God inviting you to serve with joy? Or to receive help instead of trying to do everything yourself?
10. How can your group pray for you as you seek to follow Christ through both attentive listening and loving service?
